SEND Report 2022

What are the kinds of special educational needs do we provide for?

Cognition and Learning - All children attending our schools will be experiencing a degree of learning delay. This includes pupils and young people with moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).

Communication and Interaction - Children at the schools may also have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and therefore have difficulty communicating with others.

Autism - Children diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or who are on the diagnostic pathway for Autism, who are also likely to have particular difficulties with social interaction, are also provided for by the school.

Sensory and/or Physical Needs - In addition to learning difficulties, many of the pupils and young people who attend our schools have a sensory need for example a vision or hearing impairment or a multi-sensory impairment which requires specialist support and access arrangements. Others may have a physical disability that requires additional support and equipment to enable the child to access all the opportunities available.

Medical needs - We work closely with the Diana Nursing Team to access specialist medical training opportunities e.g. enteral feeding, tracheostomy care and epilepsy. Staff are trained and have their competency assessed before they able to support children with medical needs.

Social Emotional and Mental Health - children with these additional needs may experience a wide range of difficulties and might have a specific diagnosis for example, attachment disorder. Staff have high levels of expertise to support children who experience these difficulties and again we engage with other professionals to ensure the most effective interventions and opportunities are provided.

How do we support pupils with SEND improve their emotional and social development?

From individual starting points, we support children to develop their emotional, social and independence skills by delivering learning opportunities that:
 Provide teaching and learning which will equip children for the rest of their lives
 Address the learning needs and styles of the individual child
 Develop and build self-esteem to enable children to grow into confident individuals
 Ensure that children enjoy learning and become independent and enthusiastic learners for life
 Provide a range of enriching, engaging and innovative learning opportunities.

How do we adapt the curriculum and learning environment and what equipment and resources are used to support pupil’s SEND?
We aim to provide inclusive and accessible learning opportunities for all pupils; this is done through personalisation, differentiation and knowledge of
children’s individual likes and interests. Specialist seating and other equipment is provided by therapists when there is a need, in addition, the school is incredibly well resourced to enrich children’s learning e.g. touch screen computers, switch activated toys and adapted bikes.

The school is fully accessible both inside and out. We have a range of specially adapted outdoor play equipment for non-mobile children and those in specialist buggies and wheelchairs. The purpose built building is on one level making it a highly accessible and inclusive environment. We have a spacious toilet and changing areas with specialist changing beds, child sized toilets and hoists. We also have mobile hoists and an accessible toilets for adults.
